THE NOISE OF SILENCE
Dženat Dreković

Description: The "Omarska" concentration camp, also known as the Omarska Mine, was a place of imprisonment and torture for Bosniak and Croat populations from the Prijedor municipality during 1992, amid the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

This short photo essay, consisting of five images, aims to capture the anxiety of the atmosphere on the anniversary day. Through portraits of those who came to pay their respects to the victims, I wanted to show—if only for a moment—how powerful and evocative silence can be.

About the artist: Dženat Dreković has been professionally engaged in photography since 2000, when he enrolled in the photography program at the Academy of Fine Arts in Belgrade. Since then, photography has been an inseparable part of his life, both professionally and personally. Before studying photography, he photographed as an amateur, and he considers that period the most beautiful because it was "a time of discovering himself through a new form of expression." He worked as a photojournalist for daily newspapers and weekly magazines (Blic, Dani, Gracija, and others), and has been working at the Center for Investigative Journalism (CIN) since July 2015.

He is a member of the Association of Fine Artists of Applied Arts of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), a co-founder and collaborator of the Center for Photography, Film, and Multimedia in Sarajevo, and he was also the artistic director of the "Jelićeva" Photo Gallery, the first photo gallery in Sarajevo. He has captured numerous scenes of cultural life in Sarajevo, as well as photographs of random passersby on the streets.
