The Lives Behind the Fields of Death" story of Emina Hajdarević
Lamija Grebo

Description: I spoke with members of the families buried in the Potočari Memorial. With help of the technical team of BIRN BiH, 100 videos were recorded, each with the same background and framing method. In this interview, Emina Hajdarević, mother who lost son in Srebrenica genocide, talks about the items she gave to the Memorial Center and shares story of her boy.

I strove to present the story of Srebrenica, which is mostly told in terms of the number of people killed, in a more humane way - talking about the people who suffered and how their suffering affected family members.

About the artist: I have been working on transitional justice issues for a decade, reporting from war crimes trials and collecting testimonies from war victims, giving them a much-needed voice and platform to share their stories publicly. With my stories, I draw attention of the public and the Bosnian authorities to the struggle of war victims and their families for justice and advocates for their rights.

By telling personal stories for the survivors of the war, I contribute to the commemoration and remembrance of the Bosnian war and its victims, as a warning and reminder to future generations of the devastating consequences of the war. I was shortlisted for the Srđan Aleksić Award in 2022 for "her contribution to the community" and was part of the editorial staff of BIRN BiH, which in 2020 received a special European Press Prize for "reporting on war crimes trials, issues of transitional justice and problems faced by victims of the 1990s conflict." I was the main journalist on the project "Lives beyond the fields of death", which represents a valuable resource for future generations, keeping them from being forgotten and contributing to the reduction of genocide denial.
