Peripheries
Tomasz Dobiszewski

Description: The photographic frame limits visibility, leaving everything beyond it to speculation. This project reverses that perspective, exploring the margins of famous photographies made during a Balkan Conflict by generating their peripheries.

Though not always accurately, these AI-generated extensions aim to evoke associations with the original. What lies beyond the frame does not exist—it is an algorithmic creation. The project examines the crisis of representation and the nature of truth in the digital age. Using AI-generated photography, it questions the authenticity of images and the boundaries of perception in a world where reality and fiction are increasingly intertwined.

About the artist: Tomasz Dobiszewski graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Poznan in 2005. Since 2018, he works in the Department of Media Art at the Eugeniusz Geppert Academy of Fine Art and Design in Wroclaw, Poland.

He formulates his artistic statement using photography, video, animation, multimedia and site-specific installations, mail art or book art. In his works, which show the processes how to artistically tame the media, he does not stop at purely conceptual cognitive strategies, but enriches the discourse with extra-intellectual elements, such as sensual impressions and intuitive cognition.

His experiments with a new tool are carried out not only to achieve predictable results, but he attempts to shift the emphasis to the periphery of a given method and use the inherent, although non-basic, properties of devices and technologies, which often tend to be more interesting and unevident. Recently, he has been focusing on visualising unperceptible phenomena, which not only broadens our knowledge of the surrounding world, but also deepens our imagination and develops visual thinking.
